High Speed Tax

(Apologises it has been so long of not Blogging- I have been busy with real life)

Now I am all for innovation, the future and development. A high speed rail network connecting Europe, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Scotland? YES. Well overdue in my opinion. The UK is so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to high speed rail.

The idea of going from London to Birmingham in under an hour kind of excites me slightly, in an odd perverse way. However, what does not excite me (in a perverse or non perverse way) is the cost to the taxpayer. £30 billion? Jog on. That is double what the current Department of Transport Budget is. Why is the Government so focused on "Public funded projects"?

Lord Andrew Adonis, Transport Secratery, says: "A high speed rail network in Britain will not evolve organically out of nowhere. It will only happen if Government has the foresight to start planning now."

His obssession with Publicly funded projects does the dream of high speed rail network no favours. All you need to do is look at The Channel Tunnel, and it's success, to see what can be achieved if people and businesses put there resources and expertise together, rather than expecting Government to do it for them.

This is the key point. If people could only get past their misconceptions that "I need the Government to do this for me", things could and do work. Whatever happened to the "power to the people" spirit? We do not need Government for everything in our lives. As human beings, and as a society, we can work together to acheive what WE want.

Say it once more... for me?
POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
